SKILL 1: BE SURE THE SENTENCE HAS A SUBJECT AND A VERB

Di dalam bahasa inggris, setiap kalimat wajib memiliki subjek dan verb. Permasalahan yang paling umum yang akan kita hadapi di Structure section pada tes TOEFL adalah kalimatnya tidak memiliki baik subjek maupun verb atau keduanya, atau kalimatnya memiliki subjek atau verb yang lebih.

Example I

____ was backed up for miles on the freeway.

(A) Yesterday

(B) In the morning

(C) Traffic

(D) Cars

Contoh kalimat diatas memiliki verb (was), tetapi tidak memiliki subjek. Jawaban (C) adalah jawaban yang paling tepat karena (C) Traffic adalah subjek tunggal yang benar apabila dipasangkan dengan was. Jawaban (A) Yesterday dan (B) In the morning bukan merupakan subjek. Walaupun (D) Cars juga subjek, tetapi Cars adalah bentuk jamak sedangkan verb dari kalimat diatas adalah was yang merupakan verb tunggal.

Example II

Engineers____ for work on the new space program.

(A) necessary

(B) are needed

(C) hopefully

(D) next month

Contoh kalimat diatas memiliki subjek (engineers) tetapi tidak memiliki verb (to be). Jawaban (B) are needed merupakan jawaban yang paling tepat karena jawaban (A) necessary, (C) hopefully, dan (d) next month bukan merupakan verb (to be).

Example III

The boy _____ going to the movies with a friend.

(A) he is

(B) he always was

(C) is relaxing

(D) will be

Contoh kalimat diatas memiliki subjek (boy) dan bagian dari verb (going). Untuk melengkapi kalimat diatas diperlukan bentuk verb be. Jawaban (A) he is dan (B) he always be bukan jawaban yang tepat karena di dalam kalimat sudah memiliki subjek (boy). Jawaban (C) merupakan juga kurang tepat karena relaxing merupakan verb extra yang tidak diperlukan dalam contoh ini. Jawaban yang tepat adalah (D) will be karena will be + going adalah kata kerja.

EXERCISE: Underline the subjects once and the verbs twice in each of the following sentences. Then indicate if the sentences are correct (C) or incorrect (I).
